FAQ
The Hague Convention on the Service Abroad of Judicial and Extrajudicial Documents (often referred to as the Hague Service Convention) is an international treaty designed to simplify and standardize the process of serving legal documents across borders. It allows countries to facilitate the service of documents in foreign jurisdictions in a way that complies with local laws and respects the rights of individuals involved.
The Convention provides multiple methods for service, including service via a country’s Central Authority, by registered mail, or through direct personal service, depending on the country’s laws and the nature of the documents.
Sweden does not oppose the use of private vendors to execute service of process. This enables us to assist international clients in serving documents efficiently in Sweden.
Article 5 of the Hague Service Convention allows documents to be served through a country’s Central Authority. This method ensures formal compliance with international procedures. In Sweden, the Central Authority oversees and confirms delivery with official documentation, making it the preferred method for criminal cases.
Article 10 outlines alternative methods of serving legal documents internationally, such as direct personal service (Article 10b) and service through registered mail (Article 10a). These methods are allowed in countries like Sweden, which have not objected to these provisions.

The service timeline depends on the method used:
- Central Authority service (Article 5): This can take between 2-6 months.
- Regular Direct personal service (Article 10b): Generally completed within 1-2 months for regular cases.
- Express Direct personal service (Article 10b): Generally completed within a week.
- Service via registered mail (Article 10a): Typically takes from a few days to a couple of weeks.
If the recipient refuses to accept documents during personal service (Article 10b), we are authorised under Swedish law to complete the service without the recipient’s signature.
If the recipient is difficult to reach or refuses service, we can complete the service via a household member, employer, or by posting the documents on the recipient’s door (a process called “spikning”). If this also fails, we will advise on alternative solutions.
For international clients, payment is required in advance. The payment is processed through our digital order form at the time of booking the service.
